Some accounting amounts can be established by checking completed transactions, whereas others require an estimate of events whose eventual outcome is not yet observable at the reporting date. For an estimate of this second kind, a difference between the reported amount and the amount ultimately realized does not, by itself, demonstrate that the original estimate was unreasonable. A defensible estimate may be based on the information available at the time and still differ from the outcome when circumstances subsequently change.
This does not imply that all estimation differences should be excused as unavoidable uncertainty, since the assumptions selected can favor one reported result over another. An evaluator therefore needs to distinguish uncertainty that could not reasonably have been removed from a selective use of evidence that was already available. Judging the process only after learning the final outcome risks confusing information acquired later with information that the preparer could have used earlier.
One practical response is to document important assumptions and the reasons for choosing them while the estimate is being prepared, rather than reconstructing those reasons only after a challenge arises. That record cannot establish that a particular prediction will be correct, but it can make the basis of the judgment more accessible to subsequent scrutiny. The relevant question is thus not simply whether the estimate matched the future, but whether the reasoning was supportable given the evidence and uncertainty present when the decision was made.
