Finding one’s way through a public building is not simply a matter of reading signs, because visitors begin forming expectations from the arrangement of entrances, corridors, and visible destinations before they notice written instructions. A corridor that appears to continue toward an important room can invite movement even when a small sign directs people elsewhere, creating a conflict between spatial cues and explicit information. When visitors repeatedly hesitate at the same point, adding another sign may address part of the difficulty while leaving that underlying conflict unchanged.

An architect examining the problem can follow the sequence of decisions a first-time visitor must make, noting which destinations are visible and which choices require information that is not yet available. This perspective differs from tracing a route already familiar to the designer, whose knowledge of the final destination can conceal the uncertainty experienced by someone entering the building for the first time. The resulting observations may suggest a change in lighting, the opening of a sightline, or a clearer distinction between similar-looking junctions, as well as revisions to the signs themselves.

Such changes should be considered in relation to the people using the building, since a cue noticeable to one visitor may be difficult for another to perceive or interpret. Testing routes with varied users can reveal where a seemingly clear arrangement relies on abilities or prior knowledge that the design has taken for granted. The goal is therefore not merely to increase the quantity of directional information, but to coordinate the environment and its messages so that essential choices become more intelligible to unfamiliar users.
