Digital interruptions are commonly assessed by counting how often a device produces an alert, but this measure does not fully describe the demands placed on a person returning to an unfinished task. A reader interrupted halfway through an argument must recover not merely a location on the page but also the relationship between the claims that were being considered. The cost of an interruption may therefore depend on the structure of the activity, rather than simply on the number of seconds occupied by the alert itself.
In a hypothetical comparison, two groups receive an identical number of messages while reading the same essay, with one group interrupted between sections and the other interrupted within them. If the second group has greater difficulty reconstructing the argument, the difference cannot be attributed to message frequency alone, since that feature was held constant. The comparison would not, by itself, establish that every interruption within a section is more harmful than every interruption at a section boundary.
For interface designers, this distinction suggests that a system should consider when information is delivered as well as how much information is delivered. A tool that postpones nonessential alerts until a natural pause may protect continuity without requiring users to disconnect from communication altogether. Its value would nevertheless have to be judged against other requirements, including the need to deliver genuinely urgent messages promptly and reliably.
