A battery-powered sensor does not consume energy only when it measures its surroundings; it may also spend energy processing a result and transmitting it to another device. A design that takes measurements less frequently can therefore extend battery life, but the saving has to be weighed against what may happen between successive observations. If the purpose is to identify a brief change rather than a slowly varying background condition, a longer interval may remove precisely the evidence the sensor was installed to provide.

Imagine a device monitoring water passing through a pipe, with an unusual condition that appears briefly and then returns to the ordinary level. Two measurements taken on either side of that episode could both look normal, even though something relevant occurred between them. Sending fewer reports would not necessarily create the same problem if the device continued measuring locally and retained information about important changes for later transmission.

This distinction separates the schedule for collecting evidence from the schedule for communicating it, two choices that are often combined for convenience. Local processing and storage introduce their own demands, so separating the schedules is not a universal prescription for reducing energy use. It does, however, make the design question more precise: which observations must be preserved, how quickly must another system receive them, and which activities account for the energy consumed? The answer may differ even for identical devices installed at different sites, since a routine background record and a warning intended to trigger immediate action serve different purposes. Specifying that purpose before optimizing the device helps prevent a measurable saving from becoming an unnoticed loss of useful evidence.
